Who’s been your biggest influence?

You’re probably expecting a cliché like “Bruce Lee” or someone like that. Three people actually. Les Jordan and Professor Wally Strauss (1908-1987).—Judo & Jiu Jitsu. They taught me that anything is possible. And Master Calvin King—Freestyle Martial Arts. He showed me that anything is possible if you apply yourself.

What does Jung Sin Yuk-Do stand for?

Integrity in what we teach. “jung sin yuk” means “martial arts spirit” and “do” means “the way.” It’s taking the art back to it’s roots. Doing it for learning and not for belt recognition.

Why would anyone want to do Jung Sin Yuk-Do?

Once they come to a class, they’ll see that it’s either like nothing they’ve done before, or is so interesting and challenging that they get hooked.

What does the future of Jung Sin Yuk-Do Hold?

Great things. I am working on many interesting things in terms of combat self-defence, so the close-in game just got so much better!

Jung Sin Yuk-Do was founded by Master Instructor Rod Cook 5th DAN in 2005, after almost 30 years of Martial Arts training in various styles such as Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Choi Kwang-Do, Karate, Muay Thai, amongst others.

Here, Master Cook shares with us:

What style is Jung Sin Yuk-Do actually like?

Interesting question. Jung Sin Yuk-Do is very similar in some ways to MMA, but with a purely self-defence emphasis. It takes the best from the best.

What do you love most about teaching Jung Sin Yuk-Do?

The freedom. Because it’s a mixed style, it’s not stagnant like many other styles. It can be heavy on combat if need be, heavy on cardiovascular if need be, heavy on weapons defence if need be, and is suited to all ages.
